Innovations in Flight Family Day

Two weekends ago, Ryan and Noah went to the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA. They really lucked out too, as they just happened to be there on the same day as the annual Innovations in Flight Family Day – score!

The Center has two massive hangars full of military, recreation, and commercial aircraft – but Noah and Ryan spent most of their time looking over the special outside display featured at the Innovations in Flight event.

They got to see Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner up close…

They saw quite a few planes from the Air Force too, including an F-16 Fighting Falcon, a C-17 Globemaster, and an A-10 Thunderbolt, which is also known as the Warthog.

They also saw an Osprey from the Marine Corps.

They saw a B-2 Bomber fly overhead as part of the display too…

An added bonus: Noah got to “drive” an ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting) truck – very fun!

And of course, no trip to the Udvar-Hazy Center would be complete without seeing the Space Shuttle Discovery. It is enormous!

They checked out some of the military aircraft in the hangars too, including this Sikorsky helicopter.

Yep, Ryan and Noah had a very fun afternoon at the Innovations in Flight event. The Udvar-Hazy Center is definitely one of their favorite places to visit, so we’ll be back again soon!

Trucks, Buses, a Helicopter & More!

Last Saturday we went to a Truck Touch event in Burke, VA. If you’re a frequent reader of this blog, you know that Noah LOVES these events! This Truck Touch is an annual fundraiser for the Spring-Mar Cooperative Preschool. We went last year too, so we knew it would be AWESOME!

There was a wide variety of vehicles (primarily BIG trucks) for kids to sit in, steer, honk the horn, and flash the lights – pretty cool!

Emergency vehicles from Burke and Fairfax County included fire trucks, an ambulance, a police car, a police van, and an animal control truck.

The Fairfax County Police Department seized this BMW from some really bad dudes, and they painted it to match their other vehicles just for fun for community events like this.

Noah also explored a garbage truck, box trucks, utility trucks, contractor vans, shuttle buses, and a cement mixer. Check it out!

And of course, no Truck Touch would be complete without a school bus!

Noah hopped in a small race car too…

But the coolest thing there was definitely the police helicopter from Fairfax County. We got to watch the helicopter land – so cool!

Here is a short video of the helicopter landing. Yeah, we were so close! As a quick reminder: If you’re reading this post in an email, you may need to open the blog webpage in order to view the video. To do so, just click on the title of the post (the link in blue) at the top of the email to open the blog in your web browser.

Yep, Noah had a great time at the Spring-Mar Truck Touch…and the big kids did too!

A fun weekend getaway in Minnesota with Grandma and Grandpa

Two weekends ago Noah and I flew to Minneapolis to hang out with Grandma Debbie and Grandpa Rod for a few days. Here’s a photo of Noah waiting for our flight.

img_0548

We flew in midday Friday, and Grandma and Grandpa picked us up from the airport.

img_0560

We headed straight to the Mall of America. We had lunch at the Hard Rock Café, and then we went to the Lego Store – shocker, I know!

img_0565

img_0571

img_0574

Next we headed to Nickelodeon Universe in the middle of the mall for rides, rides, rides! Noah and Grandpa Rod went on three of Noah’s favorite rides from our previous trips: the Big Rigs, the Barnyard Hayride roller coaster, and Diego’s Rescue Rider (or as Noah calls it, “the crazy bus”).

img_0597

img_0599

img_0601

img_0585

img_0591

img_0594

Then Noah and Grandma Debbie drove the large remote control trucks.

img_0581

img_0580

Our next stop was the Sea Life Aquarium that’s in the mall – Noah was so excited! We started with a special behind-the-scenes tour. We got to visit the laboratory and learn about how they treat and maintain the 1.3 million gallons of water in the aquarium. We also got to visit the kitchen and learn about how they prepare the food and feed the fish. The best part of the tour was going on the deck above the tanks and seeing the sharks and fish swimming below.

After the behind-the-scenes tour, we headed to the Pacific Northwest Rockpool where Noah and Grandma Debbie got to pet sea anemones. Their tentacles feel so slimy! We also saw sea stars and sea cucumbers in this exhibit.

img_0607

img_0606

Next we headed to Ray Lagoon to see the stingrays and skate.

img_0608

img_0615

After Ray Lagoon we saw exhibits on Jellyfish, seahorses, blue tangs (the Dory fish), clownfish (the Nemo fish) and pufferfish.

img_0612

img_0620

img_0622

Next we headed to the main exhibit – the giant glass tunnel – to walk through the Rainforest Reef, Shark Cove and Sturgeon Lake exhibits. Noah’s favorite part of the tunnel was seeing the sharks! We saw brown-banded bamboo sharks and sandtiger sharks. He really liked the sea turtles too.

img_0637

img_0640

img_0643

img_0644

After the aquarium we met up with Aunt Jenny and cousin Abby for supper. They happened to be in Minneapolis that weekend too – great timing!

img_0655

The next day we headed back to the Mall of America for more fun. We started at the small Minnesota Children’s Museum hands-on play area.

img_0659

img_0663

img_0671

Then we headed back to Nickelodeon Universe for more rides. Noah’s first ride of the day was Swiper’s Sweeper with Grandpa Rod. This was another of Noah’s favorite rides from our previous trips.

img_0685

Then we tried a few new rides – new to us anyway. Noah rode the Rugrats Reptarmobiles (the small bumper cars) on his own and then went on the Crazy Cars (the BIG bumper cars) with Grandpa.

img_0687

img_0689

img_0690

img_0717

img_0698

img_0697

Here’s a short compilation of videos of Noah going on rides with Grandpa Rod. As you can see, Noah had a blast! I think the big kid did too.

As a quick reminder: If you’re reading this post in an email, you may need to open the blog webpage in order to view the video. To do so, just click on the title of the post (the link in blue) at the top of the email to open the blog in your web browser.

And here’s a short video of Noah riding the small bumper cars. Crazy driver!

Don’t worry, I got in on the fun too. Noah and I went on the big Ferris wheel in the middle of the mall. Yeah, we had some great views of all the excitement!

img_0706

img_0716

We had a busy few days, so we picked up a pizza on our way out of the mall and we spent the rest of the day just hanging out at the hotel. We weren’t too tired to go swimming though!

img_0724

We headed back to the airport Sunday morning. Here is a photo of us taking off over Minnesota.

img_0730

Ryan was tracking our flight on his phone. Here is the screenshot of our flight path from Minneapolis back to Baltimore. It shows that we were going 565 miles per hour at 33,000 feet when we flew over Ohio. Noah thought that this was pretty cool!

img_0331-1

It was a quick trip to Minnesota, but we had an AWESOME time with Grandma Debbie and Grandpa Rod. We’ll see you again soon!

A fun day at the Washington Auto Show

Last Saturday we went to the annual Washington Auto Show in downtown D.C. Noah and Ryan had a blast at last year’s auto show, so they were really excited to go again this year.

The show featured more than 600 new cars from over 35 auto companies – so cool! Similar to the Truck Touch events that we’ve blogged about, Noah was able to sit in and “drive” the vehicles. The big kid hopped in some of the cars too. Check it out!

We got to see a few concept cars at the show too. This Lincoln Navigator concept car has doors hinged form the roof and steps. Very fun!

Noah’s favorite vehicles were the big cargo vans. Why? “Because lots of toys would fit, and because I can run in the back.” Ha.

Visiting our local fire station

This year Noah is being a firefighter for Halloween. Before you ask, yes, Ryan may have played a part in choosing this costume. Ha.

So a few weekends ago, Noah got all dressed up (helmet, boots and all) and we visited our local fire station. Alexandria has ten fire stations, and Station 208 is the closest one to our house – it’s just down the street. The crew let us snap a few photos for our Halloween card. So cool!

By the way, the stickers on Noah’s helmet say Fire Chief and HAZMAT Technician, and a third sticker has the Jaws of Life symbol.

We took a few photos of Noah goofing around outside the station too…

Yeah, the reflective tape on the uniform really stands out with the flash. You can’t miss him! And don’t worry, the fire hydrant was left fully intact. Ha.

Yesterday we went back to Station 208 for an open house for Fire Prevention Week. This time a fire truck (engine 205) was parked outside. Noah spent about twenty minutes exploring the inside of the truck. The driver even turned on the flashers and sirens and blew the air horn. Yep, Noah had a great time!

A great day trip to Philadelphia

Last Saturday we rode the Amtrak to Philadelphia for the day. Noah wanted to go on another train ride, and Philly is a fun nearby destination. We boarded the train at Union Station in DC.

img_4306

img_4309

img_4311

The trip took about two hours – can’t beat that! Noah enjoyed watching the speedometer on Ryan’s phone along the way. Our train got up to 123 miles per hour at one point – super fast!

fullsizer-30

fullsizer-29

fullsizer-31

After we arrived, we hopped in a cab and headed to the Please Touch Museum to explore all the hands-on exhibits.

fullsizer-9

Noah’s favorite part of the museum was driving the SEPTA bus – shocker!

fullsizer-18

fullsizer-16

fullsizer-14

Noah also got to drive a flatbed truck, trolley, car and dump truck.

fullsizer-21

img_4373

fullsizer-15

fullsizer-26

While in the construction area, Noah used a wheelbarrow to move blocks from the back of the dump truck to the conveyer belt.

fullsizer-11

fullsizer-25

In the Please Touch Garage, Noah got to work on a car engine, fill up a gas tank and rotate racecar tires.

fullsizer-12

fullsizer-17

fullsizer-19

img_4379

fullsizer-20

Noah also got to shop at the grocery store, visit a hospital emergency room and play trains too – so much to do!

fullsizer-23

fullsizer-22

img_4358

fullsizer-24

img_4514

In the Water Works area, there was a small-scale canal lock that simulated large locks like those used on the Panama Canal, Suez Canal and Saint Lawrence Seaway. Noah enjoyed watching the lock fill up with water and then opening the downstream lock gates to allow the boats to flow out. Pretty cool!

fullsizer-13

He also learned about currents and the effects of gravity and air streams on water flow.

fullsizer-28

img_4343

fullsizer-27

Yep, we had a great time at the children’s museum!

fullsizer-10

Next we rode the PHLASH bus to downtown Philly. We had a quick lunch and then went to Reading Terminal Market, which was one of our favorite finds from our last trip to Philly. Reading Terminal Market is a massive indoor farmer’s market. The market has a HUGE selection of produce, meat, cheese, baked goods, etc. from local farmers and producers. Many of the vendors cook, grill and bake right there too, so the place always smells amazing! We just stuck to desserts this trip. Noah picked out chocolate-covered pretzels, and Ryan chose truffles – yummy!

fullsizer-7

fullsizer-8

The weather was gorgeous on Saturday, so we spent a lot of time just walking around the downtown area too. First we came across City Hall.

fullsizer-5

fullsizer-6

Then we goofed around at the Board Game Art Park. As you can tell from the photos, Noah had fun playing on the huge Monopoly, Parcheesi and chess game pieces.

fullsizer-1

fullsizer-4

img_4492

fullsizer-3

fullsizer-2

And of course, Noah wanted to ride the Philadelphia subway too. So we rode the subway here and there just for kicks, and then we rode it back to the Amtrak station.

img_4505

img_4508

img_4509

So if you’re keeping track, we covered quite a few modes of transportation on our trip to Philly: car, train, taxi, bus and subway – whew! Ha.

img_4511

We had a blast in Philadelphia. It was a quick trip but definitely a lot of fun. Noah fell asleep shortly after we left the Philly Amtrak station. Yep, he had a busy day. According to Ryan’s phone, we walked over 14,000 steps!

Another fun Truck Touch!

Two Saturdays ago we met up with our good friends Adam and Yvonne and their two kids Isabelle and Ethan at a Truck Touch event down the road in Burke, VA. If you’re a frequent reader of this blog, you know that Noah LOVES these events! This particular Truck Touch was a fundraiser for the Spring-Mar Cooperative Preschool in Burke.

Washington Auto Show

This past weekend we went to the 2016 Washington Auto Show in downtown D.C. The show highlighted the newest cars from 37 auto companies – yes, lots of shiny cars and trucks!

Similar to the Truck Touch events that we’ve blogged about, Noah was able to sit in and “drive” the vehicles. And of course, the big kids – the potential buyers – got to hop in the cars too. Check it out!

IMG_0968

IMG_0948

We also got to watch drivers show off their skills on the obstacle course at Camp Jeep. We got to see a few concept cars too. This one is Kia’s Forte Koup Mud Bogger. Very cool!

IMG_0586

Noah also ran into a few of his favorite PBS characters. Yep, Wyatt from “Super Why” and Clifford must love cars and trucks too!

IMG_0985

IMG_0988

We had been cooped up in the house for most of the week because of Snowzilla, so going to the auto show was a fun reason to get out and about and window shop. We definitely plan to go back again next year!

Another fun Truck Touch in Takoma Park!

Last weekend we went to a Truck Touch event in Takoma Park, MD. This annual event is sponsored by the community group Takoma Plays and the city’s Recreation Department. Noah had a blast at this Truck Touch last year, so we of course had to go back this year!

The city provided a variety of public works vehicles (primarily BIG trucks) for kids to sit in and explore…and of course, HONK! Noah’s favorite truck to see and “steer” was definitely the street sweeper. He could drive from both sides!

A fun weekend with Uncle Chris: Part 2

As you read in our previous blog post, Noah had an AWESOME time with Uncle Chris when he visited a few weeks ago…and we still have a few more stories to tell!

Our next adventure during Chris’ visit was going to a Truck Touch event down the road in Alexandria. If you’re a frequent reader of this blog, you know that Noah LOVES these events! The city brought in a lot of their vehicles (primarily BIG trucks) for the kids to sit in, honk the horn, flash the lights, and turn on the sirens. Who wouldn’t love that?

Noah’s favorite trucks were definitely the two fire trucks – shocker! He saw a fire engine and a tiller ladder truck. Noah sat in and “steered” the ladder truck…and he (and Ryan!) got to climb into the cab at the back. Yeah, the ladder truck was the big kid’s favorite truck too!
